An endocrinologist is a medical doctor with specialized training in diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the endocrine system, including but not limited to diabetes, thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, osteoporosis, metabolic disorders, growth disorders, and hormone imbalances.
A child or pediatric endocrinologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders in children from the neonatal period through adolescence. Some of the conditions overlap with those seen by adult endocrinologists, while others are unique to this younger population. Pediatric endocrinologists treat many of the same common conditions found in adults, such as diabetes and thyroid disorders, and are also trained in conditions related to growth disorders, puberty-related issues, and hormone imbalances affecting development.
Endocrinologists are highly trained clinicians capable of diagnosing complex conditions through detailed history and physical examination, including assessment of growth patterns, hormone levels, metabolic function, and overall endocrine health. Even as medicine becomes more dependent on technology, the clinical evaluation of endocrine function will remain a critical component of patient assessment.
We are different from endocrine surgeons as we do not perform surgical procedures on endocrine glands. However, endocrinologists and endocrine surgeons work closely together for several conditions, sometimes even in the operating room
